of the Bathysmed® approach
Bathysmed offers a unique and innovative therapeutic approach to dealing with all forms of stress through scuba diving. The BATHYSMED® protocols are the result of several years of research. They were designed and put to the test during clinical trials conducted between 2014 and 2019 with survivors of terrorist attacks and military personnel that were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The approach, which consists of a combination of proven techniques and methods of mediation, sophrology, visualization and diving, procures specific benefits which have been successfully measured during these trials. Traditionally, diving certification levels confer new prerogatives such as diving deeper, being self-reliant, exploring wrecks and caves. With Bathysmed®, we harness the benefits of scuba diving to teach divers how to manage and eliminate stress, thus making them safer divers. Bathysmed® courses are above all an enjoyable and playful way to dive, while gaining valuable tools to manage and prevent stress.

Our program offers a new approach to diving that combines underwater and on land mindfulness exercises. The aim is to increase body awareness, optimise attention and concentration levels, better regulate emotions, hence better react to stress. Our approach differs from traditional diving since it includes an element of psychoeducation and utilizes techniques derived from relaxation methods, sophrology, meditation and visualization. The program is based on current physiology and psychology methods used to increase general wellness and gain long-term positive effects.

My story
From Darkness to Light: My Journey with Bathysmed
In 2017, I found myself in a deep darkness, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, which made me see the end as an escape. During those years, I clung to life, fighting to regain some semblance of normalcy. But everything changed in January 2019, during a family trip to the Philippines. It was there that, almost by chance, I discovered helmet diving. Those twenty minutes underwater, gazing at a small reef, were a revelation. For the first time in a long while, I felt a calm that I could no longer find on the surface, a profound and lasting peace.
Back in Canada, determined to explore this new passion, I enrolled in a local diving school and became a Rescue Diver in less than six months. This experience, far from being merely recreational, had a significant impact on improving my mental health. After two years of unsuccessful therapeutic attempts, diving became my healing. It helped me regain balance, to the point of returning to work after a long absence due to medical reasons.
One evening, while browsing the Quebec Subaquatique website, I came across a conference on the benefits of diving for people suffering from post-traumatic stress. This discovery was a turning point in my life. I knew I had to learn more about what Vincent Meurice, Frédéric Beneton, and the BathysMed method had to offer. My participation in this conference changed my life irreversibly. I found a new purpose: to share this transformative experience with others.
The BathysMed method is not just a diving technique; it's an integrative approach that combines the science of diving with practices of relaxation and mindfulness. This method has proven its effectiveness through four rigorous clinical studies, demonstrating significant improvements in the psychological and physical well-being of participants. BathysMed dives offer stress reduction, better emotional management, and a general sense of inner peace.
To fulfill this dream, I made the brave decision to sell everything I owned and spend three months on the island of Saint Martin to become a Divemaster. Back in Canada, I continued my training, becoming a PADI instructor in August 2020, and then a BathysMed 2nd-degree instructor in Conflans, Paris, in March 2022. This training was one of the most enriching experiences of my life, helping me to free myself from the last symptoms of my post-traumatic stress.

Each of the BathysMed® (BTY) diver levels is conducted over 4 dives and has specific objectives. The Master level is the combination of the 3 BTY diver levels and is conducted over 10 dives within a 3-week period.
